Top 5 Dog Friendly Hikes Around Atlanta

Hey there! Thanks for checking out our top 5 friendly dog hikes around Atlanta. We’ve selected favorites from different areas around Atlanta so you and your pup can choose to adventure out to a new place or find a great option close to home.

1.     Sweetwater Creek State Park

West of the city and outside of I-285, the drive is totally worth it for the scenery and a hike along the Sweetwater Creek or through forest, especially at sunrise. Sweetwater Creek State Park is home to eight trails that range from easy to difficult, camping sites, and a reservoir covering over 2,000 acres. This is a fan favorite for many hikers and trail runners that bring their on-leash dog companions along with them. Lastly, because I can’t forget, parts of the Hunger Games were filmed on the trails so that should be reason enough for a visit.

2.     Big Trees Forest Preserve

Located north of the city in Sandy Springs on Roswell Road, this beautiful forest preserve is host to 30-acres of forest and walking trails. There are plenty of options for easy walking to a more moderate hike. Dogs on leash are welcome and the preserve is open from sunrise to sunset. There are some great benches along the trail which make for great spots to rest and refresh with some water for your companion.

3.     East Palisades Trail

Does your dog love water? Does your dog love a good game of fetch? If yes, check out the East Palisades Trail just up I-75 inside the permitter. This awesome hiking area sits along the beautiful Chattahoochee River and can be enjoyed year-round. Do be careful in the summer as the runoff from residential fertilizer can get into the river and be harmful to dogs. Additionally, the current on the Hooch can be strong.

4.     Morningside Nature Preserve

Just consider this preserve and trail, old reliable. This is a great 2-mile intown hike for active dogs and humans who want to get up and get out there early in the day. The early bird catches the worm especially if you want to splash around in the creek and cool off before heading back home. Located in the Morningside neighborhood, this an awesome hike for dogs with decent parking.

5.     Deepdene Park

Located just off Ponce De Leon near the Fernbank Museum, this park offers 22-acres of land with many walking paths and good tree coverage to keep you and your dog nice and cool. These trails are a great option to get your day started or to wind down with your canine companion after a long day.
